The world is a dangerous place to live: not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.
— Albert Einstein

Had the subject matter been less compelling or appalling, Banking on Heaven would not succeed as it does – a documentary in the simplest sense, recording that which speaks for itself. Banking on Heaven's excellence lies in its ability to have its audience's jaws on the floor for ninety minutes, incredulous that such communities are possible.

Banking on Heaven fascinates and enrages, demonstrably inspires questions, and may well inspire action as well.

The film was very well edited and flowed quite well. The stories told were hard hitting and very personal. The room was extremely quiet as the story was told and everyone present was riveted to the screen.

Many of the boys said children didn't attend school past the eighth grade and that they were taught that blacks were inferior — the offspring of Cain and doomed to slavery. Such views have earned the FLDS a hate-group designation by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In Entertainment Land, HBO is planning a series called Big Love, about the adventures of a polygamous man and his three suburban wives….The show, Big Love, got a write up in Time magazine under the too-cute headline “Three’s Company.”…A documentary by Laurie Allen called, Banking on Heaven, debuted recently at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It tells the stories of women who fled polygamous cults where they were married off young, kept pregnant and taught to “keep sweet” and obedient….Those cults are about mind control, domestic violence, child abuse, child brides, and cast off boys.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – “Banking on Heaven,” a documentary on women who have fled a polygamist cult based along the Utah-Arizona border…speaks with women who have fled the sect. They say they were married off as young as 14 to men who had many wives and kept pregnant for as long as they could bear children. “The same thing is happening in Bountiful,” Allen said. She was quoted by The Canadian Press.
